After experiencing standard interpersonal childhood traumas (as well as extreme one like growing up in a cult), I spent my 20s and 30s in an endless cycle of emotional dysregulation—my life was chronically messy, and I managed my ever-present anxiety with booze. And boys. And self-starving…and moving somewhere new every few months…and there was that compulsive exercise phase that ended only when I made myself so sick I couldn’t work out anymore…etc, etc. Chaos was my uncomfortable comfort zone, and deprive-and-binge patterns were my only tools for managing my painful inner world.

Healing has been a long journey, but fourteen years after hiring my first life coach, twelve years after beginning to meditate, and nine years after quitting alcohol and drugs, I have developed a deep understanding of my own trauma patterns, how my fight/flight/freeze responses drive my self-sabotage behaviors, and how I can regulate my inner state without relying on outer stimuli. (Alternately, how to use outer stimuli healthfully to promote my inner regulation.) Learning to feel safe in my body is an ongoing journey, but I am slowly, constantly expanding my capacity, guided by my own series of good habits that gives me access to wellness and what I’ve always wanted most: a life that works.
